The Geoparks are ideal destinations for the implementation of environmental education programs focused on geo-environment and on the interaction of abiotic and biological parameters.
The official capacity building activity of the UNESCO Global Geoparks organized with the support of UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network.
This annual educational activity, the Intensive Course of Geoparks is organized by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean.
The Intensive Course is open to directors, executives and staff memebrs of Geoparks, researchers with interest on geoparks and postgraduate students from different countries.
Participants have the opportunity to attend lectures by top experts of the UNESCO Global Geoparks and the Global Geoparks Network as well as expert lecturers on issues related with Geoparks operation and activities on the development of alternative forms of tourism in geopark, geological monuments managemant and conservation as well as local development tools.
By providing field trips, a variety of activities and visits to geological, ecological and cultural sites and landmarks, it offers a comprehensive and multifaceted knowledge on geology, geography, history, economics and environmental and economic resource management of a region.
UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Lesvos is a living laboratory for the study of geological and natural processes and their results.
In recent years, the Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest has undertaken a variety of educational activities for Universities and supports the implementation of field course in collaboration with many Universities from all over the world and Greece.
Within the framework of the educational activities, students have the opportunity to tour the Geopark of Lesvos, during which they will experience the Petrified Forest, the natural and geological monuments of Lesvos and its cultural monuments.
They can visit the Nissiopi Marine Park, Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest, thematic Museums of Lesvos, many geological heritage sites, calderas and other volcanic geosites, the hot springs, the bays of Geras and Kalloni.
Universities that collaborate with the Lesvos Geopark for educational activities are the the University of London (UK), University of Shefield (UK), University of University of Kiel (Germany) for six consecutive years, the Geology School of the University of the Earth Sciences in Beijing (China), the University of New York (USA), as well as the University of Thessaloniki, the Agricultural University of Athens and the University of the Aegean.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest plans and implements educational programs that are geared towards all educational levels and take place both in outdoor parks and in the exhibition halls of the Museum. They aim at providing students with knowledge and experience through experiential approach to the Petrified Forest and the natural-geological monuments of the island. Through the proposed activities the children get to know the geological history, the fossilized ecosystems and the evolution of life in the Aegean.
Rich educational material for students and teachers has been created for these educational activities. Every year students from different parts of Greece and abroad participate in the educational programs.
Seminars are also organized for teachers of Primary and Secondary education, as well as international conferences on environmental education.

The aim of the global educative project “I AM A GEOPARKER” is to organize an international club of young people that define themselves as “Geoparkers: the storytellers of the history of the Earth”. The project wants to be operative in all the global geoparks that promote educative activities as an important work area in their territories.
