Agios Athanasios in Mytilene

The Metropolis Cathedral of St. Athanasios is distinguished by its enormous Gothic-style bell tower. The church is a cruciform basilica with three aisles and a central dome. The impressive bell tower was built in 1882. Its height is thirty-three meters and it has Gothic elements.

Agios Therapon in Mytilene


This is the church, the dome of which the visitors see when they reach the waterfront of Mytilene. The construction of the church began around 1850 at the site of an old chapel and it was designed by the local architect Argyris Adalis, who used to be an assistant of the two major architects of that time, the Danish Theophilus Hansen and the German Ernst Ziller.

Panagia Trouloti, Thermi Towers


The church of Panagia (Our Lady) Trouloti is built on a picturesque hill in Ano Pyrgi of Thermi in the eastern part of the island, just ten kilometers from the town of Mytilene. It is a cruciform temple with a dome and dates back to the 14th century. This is one of the few Byzantine churches preserved on the island of Lesvos. The temple is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and it is named Trouloti or Tourloti, because it is one of the rare cases where the dome is adorned by the image of the Virgin instead of the Almighty.

Monastery of Pammegiston Taxiarchon in Mantamados


The monastery is situated at a close distance from the village Mantamados, in an open space with olive and pine trees, in the north-east part of Lesbos, 36 km from Mytilene and it constitutes one of the most significant places of pilgrimage on the island.

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi Theotokou) at Agiasos


The church of the Assumption, better known as “Panagia of Agiasos”, is one of the most visited temples of the island, thanks to the Miraculous Image of Our Lady. This basilica has been built on the same foundations of an older church and it is impressive because of its the huge dimensions (length 32.20 and width 26.20 meters).

Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi Theotokou) at Petra


The church is built in the centre of Petra (55 km from Mytilene, in the north part of the island) on a rock of approximately 40m height. 114 steps carved in the rock lead to its top. It constitutes one of the most important places of pilgrimage on the island of Lesvos. The church is also called Panagia Glykofilousa (Our Lady of the Sweet Kisses).

Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos Ypsilou


The Monastery of Ypsilou (the Greek word ‘ypsilo’ means ‘high’), a men’s monastery, is dedicated to Agios (Saint) Ioannis Theologos and is located at the western part of Lesvos, on the top of a high mountain, called Ordymnos Mount, at an altitude of 634 meters and 81 Km from Mytilene.

Limonos Monastery


The Monastery of Agios Ignatios, known as Limonos Monastery because of a meadow (“limonas” in Greek), is located 3 km. from the town of Kalloni, in the direction from Kalloni to Eressos. According to tradition, the monastery was founded in 1526 by Agios (St.) Ignatios, on the ruins of a Byzantine monastery and it was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Today it celebrates on the day of its saint founder. More:

Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Koimisi Theotokou) at Damandri


The monastery of Damandri is situated in the area of Polichnitos, 5 km. from the village. The monastery’s katholikon (main church) is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The name “Damandri” comes from a small Byzantine village, the ruins of which are very close to the monastery. This village is mentioned in a Metropolis Codex from 1567 to 1652. Today the monastery’s katholikon and some auxiliary buildings are preserved, which had housed for about three decades the nursing home of the Metropolis of Mytilene.

Monastery of Perivolis at Antissa


The Monastery of Perivolis is situated at a detour off the rural Kalloni-Antissa road just before you reach Antissa, on the banks of the Voulgaris River. It is a women’s convent dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin. In recent years the monastery has fallen into disuse.

Church of the Metamorfosis Sotira Christou (Savior Transfiguration) at Papiana


The Church of the Savior Transfiguration at the settlement of Papiana in the Kalloni county dates back to 1600 according to the inscription plate. The church is a single- aisled basilica with narthex.

The Church of St. John (Agios Ioannis) is located in the center of the island of Lesvos in the village Kerami, between Kalloni and Papiana and belongs to the Metropolis of Mythimna. According to the inscription plate the Church was built in 1733.
