Anagnostirio of Agiasos

The Anagnostirio (Reading room) of Agiasos called “The Development” was established in the late 19th century (1894) as a corporate body so as to promote literature and arts in the society of Agiasos.

Until today it continues its valuable cultural action in the following areas:

– Library of Anagnostirio

You can find in Anagnostirio a lot of Greek scientific books, as well as foreign language books: ancient Greek and Latin Literature, Law, old editions, manuscripts etc.

– Music and Dance tradition

The Anagnostirio has never ceased to be interested in music, vocal and instrumental. The activity in this area has included the following so far: operettas, traditional music group, dancing department, choir, a zither department and the establishment of the Meeting of Traditional Music and Dance Groups of Lesvos.

Amateur Drama

Unsurprisingly the Anagnostirio adapted to the spirit and the repertoire of the time and presented idyllic dramas, national content tragedies, one-act comedies and other similar plays.

It features a cinema room.

– Carnival

From an early time the Anagnostirio was interested for the carnival and it has been organizing carnival events from 1937 until today.

– Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum includes various exhibits, such as craft tools, handicrafts and folklore products, iron products, woodworking tools, traditional costumes, representation of a typical Agiasos house, etc.

Museum of Refugee Memory 1922 in Skala Loutron

The Museum of Refugee Memory 1922 is located at Skala Loutron, housed in the old primary school of the village. The Museum has been created with the assistance and efforts of the Association of People from Asia Minor in Skala Loutron (called “Delfini”) in order to preserve the historical memory and rescue the last “treasures” of Asia Minor in Lesvos.

In the Museum visitors have the opportunity to be informed of Asia Minor from the first Greek colonization and the development of the areas where Greeks settled down until 1922. They also learn about the settlement of refugees in Greece.

The collection of the Museum, which is constantly enriched by offerings, includes about 500 exhibits:

– Traditional costumes

– Jewellery

– Icons

– Photos

– Journals

Museum of Resin in Ambeliko

The Museum of Resin in Ambeliko was created in 1995 on the initiative of the Priest Efstratios Kakampouras with the assistance of all residents of the village. The building where it is located is in the courtyard of the Church of St. Nicholas at Ambeliko.

The exhibition is structured into three main sections:

Collection of Resin

This room is dedicated to items with which the workers used to collect the resin and it is the only exhibition of such a collection in Greece.

– Folklore Collection

Some of the exhibits of the collection are the following:

  • Houseware
  • Tools (agricultural, textile, etc.)
  • Weapons
  • Currencies
  • Musical instruments
  • Photo cameras

– Ecclesiastical Collection

In this section the following exhibits are preserved and presented:

  • Clergy Vestments of Ambeliko
  • Choir Books printed in Venice
  • Books of Lesbian and Byzantine music
  • Wooden carved Cherubim
  • Sacred vessels
  • Icons

Folklore Museum of Vatousa

The Folklore Museum of Vatousa is housed in one of the finest neoclassical Lesvos mansions, the Gogos Mansion. It was built around 1890 by the eminent doctor Gogos as a dowry for his daughter and it became communal in the late 1960s. After its renovation, it was inaugurated in 1989 as the Cultural Centre and Folklore Museum. The exhibition is divided into three sections (ground floor, basement and first floor) and includes objects which illustrate the cultural wealth of the village and the area.

More specifically the collection includes:

– Two libraries with various Greek and foreign language textbooks,

– Agricultural tools

– Houseware

– Traditional costumes

– Photos

Plomari Folk Museum is housed on the first floor of a building at the central square of Plomari town, next to one of the perennial plane trees in the area. The exhibits reflect the rich folklore and maritime tradition of the area. They include:
