Το ηφαίστειο του Λεπέτυμνου, είναι το μεγαλύτερο ηφαιστειακό κέντρο της Λέσβου. Αρχικά δημιουργήθηκε ένα μεγάλο στρωματοηφαίστειο στη βόρεια Λέσβο. Βίαιες ηφαιστειακές εκρήξεις που ακολούθησαν δημιούργησαν μια μεγάλη ηφαιστειακή καλδέρα. Η ηφαιστειακή δραστηριότητα συνεχίσθηκε, και στο εσωτερικό της μεγάλης καλδέρας δημιουργήθηκαν δύο μεγάλοι ηφαιστειακοί δόμοι που έφτασαν σε ύψος τα 968 μέτρα, σχηματίζοντας τις κορυφές Προφήτης Ηλίας και Βίγλα.

Νότια της Στύψης στο εσωτερικό της καλδέρας εντοπίσθηκε ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα γεωθερμικά πεδία της Λέσβου.

The Lepetymnos volcano is the largest volcanic center of Lesvos. At first, a large stratovolcano was created in northern Lesvos 18.5 million years ago. Next, the violent volcanic eruptions that followed destroyed the volcanic cone and created the largest volcanic caldera of Lesvos, extending from ​​the region of Molyvos to the Petsofas hills north of Kalloni. The continuing volcanic activity within the large caldera resulted in the formation of two large lava domes reaching heights of 968 meters. These domes form the mountain peaks of Profitis Elias and Vigla.

The hydrothermal activity which came after the volcanic activity caused the weathering of rocks inside the caldera, thus creating extensive areas of silicification and deposits of alum (stiptirias in Greek), to which the village of Stypsi owes its name.
