The Lesvos Geopark organizes guided tours and scientific information activities at the Bali Alonia Petrified Forest Park, where we invite the visitors of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the Lesvos Geopark.

The Bali Alonia Petrified Forest Park is the historical site of the Petrified Forest where the conservation and highlighting of the petrified tree trunks were recently completed, while new fossil sites were identified after a huge effort to conserve, reconstruct and highlight a cluster of petrified tree trunks in the southern part of the Park.

This event includes a guided tour of the most important fossil sites and information about the unique fossils found in the historic site of the Petrified Forest, which has had the characteristic name “Main Petrified” since the 17th century, about the conservation and promotion of the fossils, and about the importance of the site for the international recognition of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos!

The Lesvos Petrified Forest Park is an important protected fossil area of 250 acres. Through the research works of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, significant plant fossils have been uncovered. More than ninety standing and lying tree trunks of coniferous and angiosperm trees, root systems and leafy horizons make up a geosite of rare natural beauty.

Among them, the tallest standing fossilized trunk in the world, its height reaches 7.2 meters and its circumference reaches 8.5 meters. It is a sequoia tree with gigantic dimensions, indicative of the composition of the forest ecosystem that used to exist in the area.

Visitors during the guided tour will also get to know the pines and cypresses of the Park as well as fruit plants, thus composing the landscape of the vegetation on Lesvos 20 million years ago. The dozens of petrified tree trunks, the rich flora and fauna as well as the volcanic, tectonic landforms along the walking routes, and the history of millions of years unfolding in every part of the Park, bear witness to the outstanding geological history of the Aegean.

The actions of the Museum of Natural History of the Lesbos Petrified Forest are carried out within the framework of the action “Actions to highlight protected areas of Lesvos”, which has been included in the Operational Program “North Aegean 2014-2020”.
