16 Anemotia Volcano

The volcano of Anemotia is one of the best preserved volcanoes of Lesvos. The crater of the volcano at the bottom of the valley is clearly visible, while the surrounding slopes form the walls of the crater. The village of Anemotia is built on the inner edges of the crater.

Impressive images of volcanic eruptions of lava flows on volcanic tuffs appear on the northern side of the plain of Anemotia, along the Kalloni – Sigri road. The volcanic tuff horizon interposes and separates the lower older volcanic lava flows that appear strongly weathered on the southern side of the Anemoti plain, from the younger ones that appear on the northern side and appear to be placed over the pyroclastic rocks.

Anemotia volcano was active 17 million years ago.
