Educational Programs \u2013 Partnerships and Initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n

Various educational programs for youths and visiting groups (universities, associations, conferences) are coordinated by the Geopark of Lesvos.<\/p>\n

While seeking to fulfil current educational needs and offer space for practical learning, it designs and offers educational programs for students in all levels of education using the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest as a means for learning.<\/p>\n

With the value of experiential learning rooted in the Museum\u2019s outlook, its educational programs were designed to provide children with knowledge, skills, and experiences through engagement with the Petrified Forest and the natural and geological monuments of Lesvos. They also hope to assist children and youths in discovering their relationship with our planet and nature, to take action about current environmental issues and climate change, to instill in them an interest in the wise use of natural resources and sustainable development as well as train them how to approach natural disasters such as earthquakes.<\/p>\n

Special educational spaces have been created to better satisfy the educational goals of some programs. \u201cGEORAMA\u201d is an excavation sandpit with a grid which provides children with the opportunity to experience the work of paleontology. The \u201cSEISMIC BANK\u201d is a space where students are trained how to respond to earthquakes, and they are sensitized about the importance of being prepared and taking preventative measures.<\/p>\n

The Geopark of Lesvos is also partnering with the Museum in designing and conducting educational programs, offering practical education opportunities for college students, organizing conferences and seminars for educators, running research programs on education-related topics as well as creating new educational material.<\/p>\n

UNESCO\u2019s base for geoparks and sustainable development of insular and coastal regions, the UNESCO Global Geoparks located in Greece, the UNESCO Network of Collaborating Schools (ASPnet UNESCO), the National Thematic Network \u201cUNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece,\u201d and the Ministry of Education are also part of its network.<\/p>\n

At an international level, it collaborates with educational entities, Universities, Institutes, Museums, and the members of the Global Geoparks Network of UNESCO.<\/p>\n

Directors of the educational program seek and support collaborations for effecting educational initiatives and are always there to accompany at and inform visitors about the educational programs taking place at the Petrified Forest.<\/p>\n
