{"id":7119,"date":"2023-07-19T09:58:14","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T09:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lesvosgeopark.aegeansolutions.com\/poi\/%cf%81%ce%ae%ce%b3%ce%bc%ce%b1-%ce%ba%cf%8c%ce%bb%cf%80%ce%bf%cf%85-%ce%b3%ce%ad%cf%81%ce%b1%cf%82\/"},"modified":"2023-11-14T14:32:57","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T14:32:57","slug":"gulf-of-geras-fault","status":"publish","type":"poi","link":"https:\/\/www.lesvosgeopark.gr\/en\/poi\/gulf-of-geras-fault\/","title":{"rendered":"Gulf of Geras Fault"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The gulf of Gera is a closed basin with a narrow mouth, the creation of which is due to conjugate large geological faults with a NW-SE direction, on the eastern and western sides of the gulf, creating a tectonic depression.<\/p>\n<p>The continuous reactivations of the faults create steeply sloping and tectonic terraces in the relief on the eastern side of the gulf, extending southward to the area of the village of Loutra and northward to the village of Pigi. Similar structures are also observed in the area of the village of Ippeios, on the western coast of the gulf.<\/p>\n<p>The faults of the gulf of Geras are of particular importance due to their proximity to the city of Mytilene. Their maximum seismic potential reaches 6.5 R.<\/p>\n<p>Along these faults, hot springs gush forth in the Therma area of the Gulf of Geras. The water temperature is 39.7oC and the springs are defined as sodium chloride.
