The Lesvos Geopark organizes a variety of information and education activities related to volcanic activity, volcanic structures and volcanic rocks. These actions are aimed at organized groups of visitors, associations, schools, universities as well as individual visitors who are invited to participate in special events organized on special events, conferences etc..

The guided tour on the volcanic geosites of the Lesvos geopark is one of the most characteristic activities and gives the opportunity to those interested to gain knowledge about the volcanic centers that were active 20 to 16 million years ago. The volcanic structures found throughout the western peninsula are the signs of volcanic activity, through which we can perceive the volcanic eruptions and identify volcanic products.

Volcanoes, calderas, volcanic domes, columnar lavas, dykes, are some of the volcanic geosites that dominate the western part of the Lesvos Geopark. The route includes the volcanic center of Lepetymnos, the volcanic structures of Filia and Skalochori, the caldera of Vatoussa, the volcanic structure of Ordymnos, the volcanic structures of Eresos, the volcano of Mesotopos and the volcano of Agra.

Participants getting know about the violent volcanic eruptions of the Lesvos volcanoes that brought to the surface huge amounts of volcanic pyroclastic material that traveled at very high speeds and covered the area’s extensive, dense subtropical forest. The volcanic materials moved with great speed and immediately covered the trunks, branches, fruits and leaves of the trees and created the right conditions for their fossilization.

The tour includes a visit to the Lesvos Petrified Forest Parks and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in Sigri, where they can admire the impressive fossils and gain more knowledge about the role of volcanic activity in the creation of the Petrified Forest.
