Kalloni Environmental Information Center systematically organizes events to celebrate the international days which are under the environment and nature topic. Presentations, seminar days, conferences, newsletters in the local and national press, etc..
Information activities on the value of the wetlands of western Lesvos and birdwatching excursions are carried out by the staff of the Kalloni’s Environmental Information Center of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest throughout the year.
The expert scientists of the Kalloni Environmental Information Center contribute to the valid information of the observers by gathering and publishing up-to-date data on the species observed in each location through the website www.lesvosbirds.gr.
By providing information on birdwatching locations and bird species that can be seen on a daily basis, Lesvos is once again emerging as a top birdwatching destination with the aim of attracting birdwatchers and developing alternative forms of tourism.
The participants make use of the special equipment offered by the Kalloni Environmental Information Center and make use of the observatories around the wetlands of the Gulf of Kalloni and Western Lesvos. They have the opportunity to observe Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus), Avocets (Recurvirostra avocetta), Ruffs (Philomachus pugnax) and Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola), several Black Storks (Ciconia nigra), White Storks (Ciconia ciconia) and Brown Ducks (Tadorna ferruginea) and individuals of rarer species such as the Spur winged Lapwing (Vanellus spinosus), Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) and Black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa). Smaller birds are also observed such as various species of swallows and swifts, Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), etc.
