Mytilene is the capital of the island of Lesvos and is located at its southeastern tip. It is built amphitheatrically on 7 hills. The traditional element as well as the rich history of the city is evident and reflected in the city’s architecture and monuments.
The Byzantine Castle built by the emperor Justinian dominates the area of Epano Skala. The ancient theater, the Roman aqueduct in the nearby settlement of Moria, the church of Agios Therapondas and the Metropolis with their distinctive architecture, the Jeni Mosque are just some of the city’s monuments that bear witness to the different phases of its history.
In addition, the Neoclassical buildings that adorn the city highlight its extraordinary economic growth during the 19th century. Around the port are the imposing buildings of the prefectural building, the town hall and the courts, while the old town is characterized by its traditional architecture and narrow cobbled streets.
The Museums of Mytilene and the wider area also deserve the visitor’s attention and time: the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Theophilos Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Gallery.
