Nindge
Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark is located in Ningde municipality in northeastern Fujian Province, in China. Between Taimu and Jiufeng Mountains, the Geopark consists of three interest areas: Baishuiyang Scenic Area, Taimushan Scenic Area and Baiyunshan Scenic Area and covers an area of 2,660 square kilometers.
It is characterized by abundant landscapes with magnificent granites, beautiful volcanic rocks and various forms of fluvial erosion, possessing the colorful geological elements of various types, which constitute the geological and geomorphological heritage, the stratigraphic heritage, the petrological heritage, the geological structure heritage and the hydrological heritage. etc. All these forms complement each other and form a unique combination of landscapes, creating a natural geological museum in the Park.
Geological heritage
Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the coastal region of southeast China and includes the middle part of the Mesozoic igneous zone of the region, which is an important part of the Pacific Volcanic Margin.
This is a typical area of the active continental margin of the Pacific arc. Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous dacite-rhyolitic igneous formations are widespread. The structure is dominated by normal faults that cause a main extension to the NE and are accompanied by movements to the NW and NE.
Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark offers to visitors high-quality infrastructure, with access to a variety of landforms developed in the granitic and volcanic formations, such as marolitic granite landforms, volcanic landforms, fluvial and coastal erosion landforms.
Sustainable Development
Due to its good ecological environment and long cultural history, the Ningde Global Geopark has a rich scientific character as well as strong elements of local tradition. It offers a combination of scientific research, education, sightseeing and recreation.
In order to implement a science popularization plan, Ningde Global Geopark promotes various science education and dissemination activities every year. Invites geologists to schools in the surrounding area to teach geosciences. About 2,000 students have attended relevant lectures over the past five years.
On recognized international and national activity days such as “World’s Earth Day” and “National People’s Science Day”, Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark always promotes weekly geoscience-related activity programs at the service of the local community. The Geopark committee has established a long-term cooperation with the Geological Survey Services, Universities and other members of the Global Geopark Network in China, to conduct scientific research projects and establish the relevant scientific practice and research bases of undergraduate and master students.
A business network of accommodation, catering, travel agencies and shops has been developed in the Ningde Geopark area, which not only enhances the improvement of local tourism products but also promotes the economic development of the Geopark itself and the wider surrounding area.
Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark is a comprehensive geopark of particularly high value geological heritage, in which the natural sciences and humanities are promoted.
Twinning
The Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark and Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark have signed a twinning agreement that contributes to closer cooperation between the two regions, aiming to enhance geological heritage and promote sustainable local development. The cooperation of the two Geoparks is based on the shared geological heritage (igneous rocks – coastal geomorphology – erosion landforms) and cultural elements (plants – rhododendron, relationships between rocks and plants, traditional wooden constructions, etc.).
