Bird Watching Guide (EL)

Description

The publication “Birds of the Lesvos Petrified Forest” presents the main representatives of our feathered friends in the area of the Western Peninsula of Lesvos (Ordymnos peninsula), where the Petrified Forest is located. The presentation of the birds is made by the Environmentalist Eleni Galinou, after long-term observation in the area, while the sketches of the birds have been created by Nikos Panagiotou, also an Environmentalist.

In the first part of the guide there is general information about the fauna and flora of Lesvos and especially about the avifauna of the island, the conditions and causes that have contributed to the creation of the ecosystems that are observed and the great wealth of species that exist. Also, useful tips for bird watching, bird prevention and protection instructions, equipment, etc.

In the second part, there is a detailed presentation of the characteristic species of the birds of the Lesv

os Petrified Forest, with all the information on appearance and size, habitat, food, nest, distribution, the protection status that each species has, its behavior , its reproduction and rearing of chicks, finding food, but also where we can see it. Each of the descriptions is accompanied by a sketch of the bird. Specifically, the following species are presented:

Emberiza cineracea, Emberiza caesia, Emberiza melanocephala, Sitta neumayer, Lanius nubicus, Cercotrichas galactotes, Parus lugubris, Galerida cristata, Blue wagtail ( Monticola solitarius), Black-throated (Saxicola torquata), Petronius (Petronia petronia), Asprocolina (Oenanthe hispanica), Red Sparrow (Carduelis cannabina), Harrier (Sturnus roseus), Island Partridge (Alectoris chukar), Owl (Athene noctua), Eagle-hawk (Buteo rufinus), Serpent eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Eurasian kestrel (Falco naumanni), Black falcon (Falco eleonorae). Some of them are globally threatened species and are in the “Red Book of endangered vertebrates of Greece”. Also there is the complete list of birds that live permanently or appear seasonally in the area.

In the guide, finally, there is all the necessary information for a visit to the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, the outdoor Parks and the Museum of Natural History, as well as the walking routes in Western Lesvos.
