Ouzo

Ouzo is the traditional and most beloved lesbian alcoholic drink and has almost been identified with the island of Lesvos.

The tradition of ouzo in Mytilene dates back to the middle of the 19th century. The island was in the middle of the Istanbul-Smirni-Alexandria triangle, where the distillery was born. The first recipes were brought by Greeks from Constantinople and Odessa.

The many distilleries as well as the special variety of anise found only on the island of Lesvos, confirm in the best way the local tradition in the production of ouzo.

Wine

Lesbian wine has been known since ancient times. The wine of Mithymna was even considered the nectar of the Olympian Gods. The native red variety of the Lesbian grape is cultivated to these days in the soil of the crater of the ancient volcano of Western Lesvos which created the Lesvos Petrified Forest. The fine aroma and the unique taste of the wine are due to this particularity of the soil.

The varieties named “Fokiano”, “Kalloniatiko” and “Moschato” are also cultivated. In the mountainous area of Megalochori, Plomari and in Karyona, Skopelos the variety “Mandilaria”, “Athiri”, “Assyrtiko” and “White Moschato”, is cultivated.

Although the wineries are still few in number, the modern wines of Lesvos can conquer wine lovers, with their quality, diversity and unique character.
