UNESCO Geoparks
On November 17, 2015, the UNESCO General Conference unanimously accepted the creation of the organization’s new program for Geosciences and Geoparks (International Geoscience and Geoparks Program), according to which the recognition of areas with the title “UNESCO Global Geoparks” is established. Thus, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of UNESCO, and 43 years since the establishment of the World Heritage Sites Program, the new program entitled “UNESCO Global Geoparks” establishes the recognition of areas that have a special geological heritage that has international recognition. In the new Program included all the regions that had joined the Global Geoparks Network, including Lesvos.
