The Lesvos Geopark is a special place as important evidence of the geological history of the Aegean basin of the last 300 million years or so is revealed here. Landscapes and landforms of particular beauty were formed over the years and are witnesses of its complex geohistorical evolution.
The Geopark of Lesvos gives us information even about the first stages of development of the Aegean, the period when there was a large ocean in this area, the Tethys. Tethys functioned as an ocean space for hundreds of millions of years. This oceanic area of Tethys was closed and destroyed for good about 45 million years ago.
At the same time, in the Central Aegean there was a land area called the mythical Aegis, which was connected to both the Asia Minor hinterland and mainland Greece. The Lesvos Geopark was part of this single land area, which was covered by dense tropical-subtropical forests. Between 21.5 and 16.5 million years ago, intense volcanic activity took place in the northeastern Aegean region. During this period, the important volcanic centers were created as well as the impressive volcanic structures of the Lesvos Geopark which led to the creation of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.
Impressive geosites dominate every corner of the Lesvos Geopark enigmatic buildings that stand tall, forming a unique dreamlike setting, where even every humble rock, in the land of Theophrastus, the first scientist who taught the distinction and classification of stones, has a story .
