Archaeological Museum of Mytilene

A short distance from the old building of the Archaeological Museum, in the “Kioski” area, is the new building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, the construction of which was completed in 1995, while in March 1999 the permanent exhibition entitled “Lesvos from Hellenistic to Roman” was inaugurated Epoch”, which focuses on one of the most important periods of development of ancient Lesvos, i.e. from the 4th c. e.g. until the 3rd c. A.D. The rationale of the exhibition is for the visitor to approach the daily political, economic, social and religious life of the island during this particular period.

The New Building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, which was designed with a modern museological concept, is multi-level and, in addition to the archaeological exhibition, houses archaeologists’ offices, ceramics and metal conservation laboratories, as well as the warehouses, where recorded and unrecorded archaeological finds are kept. The exhibition spaces, which are housed on two floors, consist of six rooms with the permanent exhibition and two rooms for periodic exhibitions. The way the spaces are structured led to the design of the permanent exhibition in three sections.

In the three rooms of the first ground floor, mosaic floors, wall paintings and movable finds from Roman mansions, which the archaeological dig uncovered on the hill of Agia Kyriaki in Mytilene, are exhibited, while in the three contiguous areas of the second ground floor, sculptures (reliefs, portraits and full glyphs) were placed.  The rooms of the periodic exhibition host exhibits that refer to Roman banquets.

The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, on the one hand with the events and educational programs organized by the Ephorate, on the other hand by hosting important cultural events of public or private bodies, is for the city a center of culture and intellect.
