The church of Ag. Therapontos is the largest on the island and is a Byzantine and Gothic with Baroque elements. It is located in the central market of Mytilene, in a position where from the 17th century. There was a small chapel that served the functional needs of the unique charity where patients, elderly, homeless and travelers, the well -known “Hotel” were hospitalized. Reportedly, this first temple was built on the ruins of ancient building, probably a temple in honor of Apollo or the poet Sappho school.
The current church was started to be built during the Ottoman occupation. Specifically, the work began in 1850 under archbishop of Mytilene Kallinikos Kyparissi and was inaugurated in 1935 under Metropolitan Jacob I. The architect was the eminent Argyrios Kon from Mytilene. Adalis, a student of German architects Hansen and Ziller. The iconostasis and wood carvings were crafted in 1915 by Dimitrios Kovala. The icons of the iconostasis are the work of the Brotherhood of John the Brotherhood of St. Terms and the rest of the frescoes of Vassiliou Dadakis from Hadrianoupolis.
A valuable treasure of the church is the marble sarcophagus, in which the relics of archbishop of Hungary Ignatius (1766-1828) is a fighter Hierarch during the Ottoman occupation.
Finally, let it be noted that the church was recently renovated during the reign of the archbishop of Mytilene Iakovos III.
