No martyr tombes, no written testimony, from legends of the first Christian years neither from other sources, we can derive evidence for the existence of Christians on Lesvos during the first three centuries. Light was shed on this lost period by the discovery of the catacomb , which is on the height of Makris Gialos, on Eleftheriou Venizelou Street in a dirt lane above the Mytilene Naval Club. There, inside the fenced courtyard of the residence, is the early Christian martyr dating to the end of the 3rd century. A.D..
The underground burial chamber has a cruciform shape with niches and sides, where sarcophagi were placed. It was used during the years of persecution for the burial of Christian martyrs. However, the archbishop of Mytilene Iakovos II expressed the opinion that the underground chamber is not a martyr tombe, but a family mausoleum, as in his opinion martyr tombes are found near temples.
In the area of martyr tombes, a solemn vespers is held during the week in honor of the martyrs as part of the celebrations of the Saints of Lesvos. The monument has been declared preserved.
