Ecclesiastical Byzantine Museum of Mytilene

The Ecclesiastical Byzantine Museum of Mytilene houses a remarkable collection of Byzantine culture, although the history of the museum does not date back to the distant past. In the year 1958, Archbishop Iakovos Kleombrotou came to the Diocese of Mytilene and found from his predecessor, the late Archbishop Iakovos Nikolaou, a small collection of icons and other objects of worship.

Archbishop Iakovos Kleombrotou, who had an innate passion for collecting, enriched this collection with other objects of Christian art, which he found in various churches of his diocese that were out of liturgical use, given over to wear and tear and annihilation. But as the sacred objects increased, the need to house the collection was born. Thus, from 1978, the museum began operating in a privately owned space in the center of the city, directly opposite the entrance to the church of Agios Therapondas. diocese

Among the works of Christian art in the museum, a special place is occupied by the collection of portable icons, which cover a period of more than seven hundred years, with the oldest dating back to the 13th century. Their dimensions range from very large (about 2 meters) to medium-sized images. In addition to the main collection of icons, there are collections consisting of other ecclesiastical objects, such as wood-carved doors, vestments, manuscripts, sacred vessels, works of ecclesiastical micro-art, etc.
