The “Georgios Iakovides” Digital Museum, in Hydira, Lesvos (the painter’s birthplace), is the first entirely Digital Art Museum in Greece and is housed in a three-level building built for this purpose. The creation of the “Georgios Iakovides” Digital Museum is an initiative of the Educational and Cultural Foundation “N.G. PAPADIMITRIOU”. Its goal is to act as a meeting place between Technology and Art, offering visitors of all ages an artistic experience for enjoyment and knowledge.
Formed according to a special museological study based on new technologies, it faithfully highlights the life and work of the acclaimed Greek painter through a variety of electronic digital projection and interaction systems. The works presented in the museum are all digital reproductions. Through thematic sections and with the use of various tricks, such as the magnifying glass, the isolation of elements of the painting during its analysis, the comparison with other works either by Iacovides himself or his teachers, as well as with the combination of narration and graphics the Digital Museum brings the works to life, making them more familiar to the visitor.
On the ground floor, the personality of the painter is presented so that the visitor can get to know the man Iakovidis better. Photos of family moments and professional achievements (honors and awards) are interspersed with short explanatory texts and references to the main stages of his life,
The first floor is dedicated to the work of Georgios Iakovides. From the early years of his apprenticeship under his teacher Nikiforos Lytras and the works during his apprenticeship at the Athens School of Arts, to the portraits of his grandchildren that he created at the end of his life. Mythological themes, scenes from childhood and family life, landscapes, human figures in nature, portraits, still lifes and anthographies, works with symbolic content summarize the multifaceted work of Iakovides, with which he established himself as one of the leading figures of late modern Greek art of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
In the basement, in a specially designed space, a room was built where a short video about Iakovides’ artistic career in Athens and Munich is shown, while the same space is also used for conducting educational activities, attracting both schools and the general public.
