Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos Plomariou

It is a three-aisled basilica of the lesvian type with a wooden roof, ceramic roof without variations. The ceiling of the central aisle is vaulted and decorated with the twelve apostles, the evangelists and the prophets. In the center, Christ is depicted as pantocrator surrounded by cherubs projecting “as from the clouds of heaven”. On the ceiling of the holy step there is a plaster decorative surface of excellent aesthetics in the center of which a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit, can be seen in relief.

Contrary to what one would expect, the iconostasis, pulpit and despotic throne are not typical examples of lesvian wood carving, as is the case in many temples of the island. They are wooden, but they have a simple form, without reliefs. In special showcases, valuable portable icons are displayed, which have been transferred from the now deserted neighboring monastery of St. Georgiou, from where the Crucified and the sad ones come. Of great importance is an image of St. Georgiou, which is undated and comes from the post-Byzantine era. Many objects of ecclesiastical art from different eras have also been stored in the temple.

The narthex is enclosed by a colonnade and extends to the south and north sides of the temple. Its roof is covered by cross vaults, which are decorated, but of a lower aesthetic value than that of the interior. In the forecourt there is the tomb of Metropolitan Larissa Ananias, an important son of Plomari.
