The church of the Holy Apostles is one of the oldest churches in the city of Mytilene and is not far from the metropolitan church. It is a three-aisled basilica without a dome with a vaulted ceiling, which has a remarkable decoration.
It is said to have existed already at the beginning of the 18th centuries, according to documents from 1728 and 1732. It was renovated from the ground up in 1815 with the then Metropolitan of Mytilene, Mr. Kalliniko and journeyman Dimitrios Meimaris. An element that supports the existence of a previous church before the renovation is the existence of old portable icons before the 18th century, such as that of Saint Nicholas, which dates back to 1637.
Worthy of attention is that an early Christian capital has been used as a base on one of the church’s columns. The iconostasis is a wood carving from the time of the temple’s reconstruction, as well as the high priest’s throne.
