In western Lesvos, inside the caldera of an old inactive volcano, in an area dominated by volcanic soils and rock diversity, the picturesque Anemotia is built, in the center of which is the stone-built temple of the Transfiguration.
According to information, it is the third parish church of the village in chronological order and some of its features make it unique not only on the island but throughout Greece. The first parish church of the village was dedicated to St. Catherine, but was destroyed during the Ottoman invasion. Subsequently, a church dedicated to St. was built in another location. George for the religious needs of the residents, who over time grew in number and then there was the need to build a new, larger church. Thus, H.T. was founded. Transformation in 1885, but it received its final form in 1926 after renovation works. It is a three-aisled basilica with a roof and is entirely built of pinkish stone, which was quarried in quarries in the area. The bell tower outside the church, built in 1962 by Thucydides Psarros,is also stone built.
Its stone-built iconostasis makes an impression and given that the vast majority of the island’s temples are decorated with wood-carved or marble icons, it gives a uniqueness of incomparable style and elegance. It is carved from adobe pure stone with a special color born from the land of Anemotia. It was built in 1928 from the stones of the village under the guidance of the architect and stonemason Theodoros Vloutis.
The church also houses many old icons with a history of more than four hundred years, many of which are believed to come from the old church of St. Catherine, as well as even younger ones, such as Panagia Gerontissa.
