About 20 kilometers from the city of Mytilene and in the eastern part of the island, opposite the Asia Minor coast, is the settlement of Mistegna. In the area of Mistegna, in the hills covered with olive trees, the old nunnery of the Saints Akindyna is hidden.
The catholicon of the monastery is honored in the grace of the homonymous saints. The church is a single-aisled basilica with a cruciform roof and is decorated with a beautiful wood-carved iconostasis. Inside it are old marble columns. A built-in inscription mentions the date 1896, which probably refers to a renovation of the catholicon. Tradition cites the 17th century as the founding period of the monastery. by a certain Paisius monk. It may, however, be older, as the name Akindynos was widespread in the area from previous centuries. At the time of St. Raphael mentions the hermitage of the old Akindynos.
Around the katholicon opens a large courtyard with walnut trees, tall cypresses, mandarin trees, almond trees and other trees in the shade of which there are built terraces and a recreation area and a holy well. On the west side of the courtyard are the ruined cells of the monastery, the kitchen, the bank and other auxiliary spaces.
The monastery has been abandoned and is suitable for opportunities for relaxation and peace of mind. It celebrates Samaritan Sunday, the fourth day after Easter, when a great festival is held with a display of horses, dancers and the distribution of traditional dishes.
