H.M. Panmegiston Taxiarhon Pithario Eresou known as “Pithari” is located in a hollow ravine between hills that crown it, forming around it an imaginary pithari, the bottom of which has recently been turned into an artificial lake by the construction of a dam. The absence of historical evidence for the establishment of the monastery creates the usual dichotomy among researchers, with one opinion wanting the monastery to have been founded in the Byzantine years, which declined and was re-established during the Ottoman occupation. Another point of view dates its foundation to the 16th century. During its existence, it was also used as a church prison, whose operation was interrupted with the German occupation during the Second World War and continued for a while from 1964.
It reached its current form in recent years through a renovation process thanks to the tireless efforts of the Holy Metropolis of Mytilene, Eresos and Plomari. The katholicon, the cells and the precinct were restored, rebuilt and decorated with respect for the environment and the old form of the monastery, while a fortified tower was built due to the influence of the Ypsilos monastery.
The katholikon is a single room temple, dedicated to the meeting of the Brigades. The icons of the icon are works of the monk Hatzimakarios Kafaloudis from Eresos and A.B. Ioannidis, while the interior iconography is the work of Lazaros Zikos.
On either side of the catholicon there are two chapels dedicated to the Asia Minor and Lesbian saints respectively, while within the boundaries of the monastery there is a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary of “Axion estin”. The monastery also has folklore, ecclesiastical, rock museums and a library.
