It is located 3.5 km southeast of Kalloni. It is the largest wetland of Lesvos, having an area of 4.6 sq.km.It is a system of wetlands that includes industrial salt flats, wetlands, salt marshes and coastal dunes.
Although the wetland is highly modified and reduced, it is still very important due to its size and location, strong horizontal heterogeneity, high bird diversity and many nesting species.
The prevailing vegetation is halophytic (Salicornia europaea, Halocnemum strobilaceum, Atriplex portulacoides, Arthrocnemum spp., Limonium spp.) and in many peripheral locations the overwater/wet meadow (Phragmites australis, Typha sp., Juncus spp., etc.).
At least 60 species of waterfowl have been recorded in saltpans, the most important of which played a key role in the inclusion of the Gulf of Kalloni in the network of Special Protection Zones being the Flamingos (Phoenicopterus rubber), the Brown Duck (Tadorna ferruginea) and the Pied avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta ).
