The 1922 Refugee Memorial Museum is based in Skala Loutra and is located on the site of the village’s old Primary School. It was created on the initiative of the residents in order to save the evidence of Asia Minor Hellenism and preserve the historical memory of life in Asia Minor as well as the settlement of refugees in Greece.
The Museum was inaugurated in 2006 and its collection consists of 500 exhibits, heirlooms brought by refugees from their homelands. Historical documents, books, valuable objects and valuables, hagiographies, objects of everyday life, clothing and also exhibits from the Asia Minor front. The collection is constantly enriched by donations or loans from people who believe that the “last treasures” of Asia Minor civilization should not be lost. It is noted that for each item exhibited, a special reference is made to the place of origin of the refugee holder as well as the donor or lender.
Due to the special historical and folklore nature of the Museum, the interest of visitors is great and the educational visits are sufficient. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about Asia Minor and the development of the areas where the Greeks lived until 1922. Through the objects one can get to know small personal stories and distinguish the art and customs of the Hellenism of Asia Minor .
Then the refugee facilities in Greece are presented through large built-in geographical maps. In the museum there is also a specialized library for Asia Minor which is constantly enriched with new books either from donations or purchases from the Asia Minor Association of Skala Loutra “the Dolphin” which is the main contributor to the creation of the Museum.
