It occupies the Northern part of the island and has an area of 9,347.95 ha. It is divided into two parts: the western part extends westward from Mithymna to Petra, towards Mount Lepetymnos and ends eastward at the cape of Korakas Mandamados, and the eastern part includes the area of Agios Stefanos – Palio – Sarakina of the NE. Mandamados as well as Monopetra Island.
The variety of woodland habitats and the small wetlands that function as feeding and resting stations for birds contributed to the designation of the area as a SPA.
