Taxiarchis Kato Tritos

The katholicon of the old holy monastery of Taxiarhon is located a short distance from the settlement of Kato Tritos and is preserved as the only remnant of the entire monastery complex of the Byzantine years for which there is not much historical evidence. It is likely that it was founded before the fall of 1462 and was deserted before 1600.

It is built on a plateau at the top of an olive-covered hill with an excellent view of the gulf of Gera. In the center of the space, the monastery’s catholicon is preserved, while around it there are ruined cells and auxiliary spaces.

The small single-aisled church belongs to the collapsed cruciform type with a dome. The construction of the temple is placed in the late Byzantine times. Local  stones of various sizes have been used for the stone build.

Inside, two layers of fresco decoration are preserved and most of the frescoes come from the 15th century. Parts of the church’s wood-carved altarpiece are also preserved, which are kept in the Byzantine Museum of Mytilene. One of them depicts the Great Exhortation, a work of the 16th century. and the other is an 18th century .
