The mansion, which houses the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene (old building) was built in 1912 by Achilleas Vournazos with plans by the Smyrna architect S. Vafiadis. The eclectic building consists of two main floors, as well as a ground floor for auxiliary use. The two floors and the ground floor communicate with each other with a wooden staircase. On the first floor, two oppositely placed marble staircases lead from the courtyard. In 1965 it was bought by the Ministry of Defense to become a museum.
The exhibition that was inaugurated on July 13, 1991 is the same that exists today. (Permanent exhibition in the Old building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene).
The Museum building is located at a very short distance from the city’s castle and together with it they form a single archaeological site.
