Waterfall Lagada Skalohori

In western Lesvos, in the village of Skalochori, about 2km from the village square along the stream of Lagada there is the impressive waterfall of the same name.

The waterfall is created due to a fault that affects the volcanic rocks of the area, specifically the andesitic lavas. The fault creates a large terrace of about 8 meters, which interrupts the smooth flow of water and which, as it falls, creates a natural depression at the point of the fall, forming a natural pond.

The stream of Lagada originates from the heights of Kuratsona (786m.) and Prophet Ilias (542m). Along the stream of Lagada there is a continuous flow of water throughout the year. For this reason, a large stone watermill (14 in total in the area) was built at the site of the waterfall, which in the past ground wheat produced by the surrounding farmland.

Afterwards, the stream of Lagada continues its course and ends up in the gulf of Gialouchipia on the northern coast of Lesvos, between Kalo Limani and the ancient Antissa, where it forms its estuary
