Guided tour and scientific information on the geological history of Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark

The Lesvos Geopark organizes a variety of information and education activities throughout the year. These actions are aimed at organized groups of visitors, associations, schools, universities as well as individual visitors who are invited to participate in special events organized on special events, conferences etc..

Also, in collaboration with universities from Greece and abroad, educational field exercises are carried out. A large number of students of undergraduate and postgraduate study programs, through the field exercises, get to know the geosites and protected areas, the Petrified Forest, the natural habitats and the cultural monuments of the Lesvos Geopark.

Taking the route from Mytilini to Sigri, the participants have the opportunity to take a journey through geological time and discover rocks and geological structures that bear witness to the complex geological history and evolution of the Lesvos Geopark.

Moreover, the participants have the opportunity to visit tectonic geosites as well as the most important active faults, which through their action shaped the current relief of Lesvos, such as the fault zone of Geras Gulf, which is a tectonic graben, but also the important Larsos fault. At the intersection of these two faults, the hot springs of Gera emerge.

In the area of “Lambou Myloi”, the ophiolite nappe appears that “covers” the metamorphic rocks of the geological basement, on which a dense pine forest grows. They can also observe the distinct line of vegetation change from the olive groves to the pine forest, which also testifies to the change in the geological formation.

Arriving at the Gulf of Kalloni, the largest bay of Lesvos, participants can admire the wetlands and the large number of birds that either reside permanently or stop for a period of time during their migratory journey. They also have the opportunity to observe birds in the specially designed observatories, which are located in the area.

From the bay of Kalloni and further west, there are volcanic rocks which cover the 2/3 of the total area of the island. Volcanoes, calderas, volcanic domes, columnar lavas, hot springs are the most impressive geological structures in the western peninsula.

Finally, the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a unique monument of nature with open-air parks and important fossil sites that were the significant geological monument for the creation and the nomination of the Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark.
